What is/was the thing you most look(ed) forward to about getting/being married?

I’ll get us started …

There were so many things that I looked forward to when it came to getting married. Perhaps the one that stood out most to me was just getting to do life with Steve. He is my best friend and the person I love being with more than anyone else, and I was just so excited that I would always get to have that … to enjoy him by my side for the rest of life.

Already, I have discovered that the companionship and friendship of my husband, Steve, are unparalleled. Through the good times and bad, I am so thankful to get to hold his hand through it all. Whether it’s an adventure, the day-to-day stuff, or the rough times, everything is better with Steve. I’m so thankful to be married to my best friend because life with him is truly the best!

Okay, it’s your turn!

What’s one thing you would love for you and your spouse (or significant other) to do at some point in your lives? If you’re not married, what’s one thing you would love to do at some point in your life?

I’ll get us started …

I love travelling. Seeing a new place and exploring it for the first time with my husband is one of my favorite things to do. There’s nothing like a new adventure with new people, food, and fun to be had.

That being said, I have always wanted to go to Italy and Greece. I’ve wanted to go since I can remember, and ever since Steve and I got married, I’ve talked about how that trip is one I dream of experiencing together. And … our dream is about to be a reality! This September for our anniversary, we are doing a cruise touring all of the places we’ve always wanted to see in Italy and Greece. Just saying it makes me all giddy! I cannot wait J

Fun For Two

Friday, January 6th, 2012

By Ashley McIlwain

My husband, Steve, and I travel around quite a bit trying to visit with our families that happen to be spread across the United States. While we love visiting our families, it can be challenging to save vacation time, energy, and money to go and do things that we want to do outside of those trips. What we’ve tried to do though is combine the two when possible.

Over Christmas we did just that. It was our turn to visit with Steve’s family up in the bay area, so we managed to squeeze in a few extra little “just the two of us” moments where we could. It made for a very busy Christmas vacation, but we loved every second of it.

First on the list was to head into San Francisco for a quick day trip. It’s tough to beat a big city during Christmas time. The decorations, bustle, and overall cheer makes me giddy with excitement. We enjoyed all of our favorite spots including Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Pier 39. Of course we had to hop on the trolleys a time or two, which is always a highlight of being in San Fran.

Also on the agenda this trip was checking out the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. It turned out to be a tiny, hole-in-the-wall, four person operation. Not only were we amazed at this spectacle, but we took advantage of devouring fresh, flat fortune cookies. All around, we loved exploring one of our favorite cities during the most wonderful time of year.

At the end of our visit with Steve’s family, we decided to take a stroll down memory lane by cruising down the 101. We took this gorgeous, California coastal drive for the first time on our engagement trip back in 2007, and we hadn’t done it since. It was so much fun exploring some new and old places along the way.

Our first stop was Santa Cruz. We decided to hit up The Mystery Spot. I’d heard of this place and certainly seen the well-known bumper stickers, so we just had to check it out. It was definitely interesting to experience the gravitational oddities and hypothesize as to what might be the cause. At the end of it all though, we were left with an unsolved mystery … spot.

After being mystified, we checked out the Santa Cruz boardwalk, which is a cool hybrid of beach meets carnival meets arcade. Candy, rollercoasters, and scenic views made for an amusing afternoon together. We followed that up by revisiting the gorgeous, breathtaking spot where Steve proposed to me. It’s tough to even describe the picturesque scene that stirs up so many wonderful memories from the second most incredible day of my life (next to our wedding day, of course). There’s nothing like revisiting somewhere that is so special to you as a couple. I highly recommend everyone doing this from time to time.

Onward we pressed to Monterey. Monterey is such an adorable place; it’s one of my favorite California locations. We started off our day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which was a real treat. You can’t go wrong with jellyfish, sea otters, and seahorses. Next we took a stroll along the Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s the perfect place to go for a hand-in-hand stroll and some of the freshest saltwater taffy you’ll ever gobble up.

Finally, we made a point of heading to Buellton where we gorged on the famous Anderson’s split pea soup. Yum! After a good night’s rest, we launched the final stretch home by first stopping at our favorite breakfast spot, Paula’s Pancake House in Solvang. Their pancakes are divine to say the very least.

All in all, there is nothing quite like a little fun for two with my hubs. Making memories together is priceless. I treasure our adventures together, knowing that these moments are what make life’s journey worthwhile. What a blessing it is to have my husband be my best friend that I enjoy being with and love so very much!

Anyone else have any recent fun excursions, memory-making, or stories they want to share?

A Birthday Celebration of Love

Friday, June 24th, 2011

As I mentioned in my recent article A Celebration of Life, birthdays are definitely a big deal for me, my family, and now my husband. It’s truly a time to rejoice and celebrate the gift of life. Whether it’s taking time to remember all the blessings, lessons learned, and memories made or making the effort to express the value of a loved one in your life, birthdays are the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Like every year, I plotted and planned for months to come up with the perfect way to celebrate my husband’s birthday – after all this is my yearly tribute to the gift that he is in my life. I finally settled on our agenda that started Friday (June 17th) on his actual birthday and stretched through the weekend to Sunday.

Friday morning I kicked off his actual birthday with what has become a yearly, birthday tradition – fresh, homemade cherry cheesecake muffins and my own private rendition of Happy Birthday sang first thing in the morning before he left for work. That was followed by a lunch date at the restaurant of his choice, which ended up being the always delicious Chick-fil-A. When Steve arrived home, we got dolled up to head out to dinner at Roy’s, a restaurant we fell in love with on our visit to the Big Island of Hawaii. Personalized menus with a birthday greeting, confetti on the table, and a framed picture to remember the night by, Roy’s has got hospitality down to a science. We finished the night off with Steve opening his birthday gifts and cards – always a fun part of celebrating.

The weekend continued Saturday morning with some laid back, old married couple style running around town. We love doing simple things like that together, and we even ventured out to another of Steve’s favorite places to eat for lunch, Cosi. After enjoying our average morning and afternoon out and about, we came home to prep for our evening plans – a BBQ with two of our favorite friends Ryan and Diane. With our special company by our sides, we had a delicious dinner, lots of laughing, and a Coldstone birthday cake remix ice cream cake (pretty much the greatest thing ever) to top off day two of our celebrations.

Sunday was the big celebration day that I had planned for Steve. We got up bright and early, grabbed some coffees and breakfast, and headed over to Balboa Island to catch our ride to Catalina Island for the day. Once onboard, we enjoyed the much longer and choppier ride than we had anticipated over to the island. We had heard mixed reviews of Catalina Island; some people thought it was great while others weren’t such big fans, but we opted to leave expectations at the door and arrive at the island with an open mind.

Upon arrival to the main town, Avalon, we instantly loved its quaint appeal. It was an interesting hybrid of a Mediterranean escape meets small, Americana town. The water was gorgeous, the shops adorable, restaurants interesting, and the overall vibe inviting. After walking through the limited number of streets, we picked up a mid-morning snack and went straight to our big adventure for the day – the two hour long zip line eco tour as seen in The Bachelor Pad.

On our honeymoon we had ventured to go on a zip line tour and loved it, so I thought this would be the perfect activity for us to tackle in celebration of Steve. It was even better than our previous zip line experience; it was incredible! The views were spectacular, the zip lines were long, fast, and exhilarating, and the tour guides were fabulous and funny. We loved every second of it and would highly recommend it to anyone headed to Catalina any time soon.

After having our big thrill for the day, we walked hand-in-hand weaving through the shops and reading menus to find our re-fueling station. We settled on a place called Original Jack’s Country Kitchen, and it was … interesting. Bellies somewhat full, we hit up some of the local candy and ice cream shops where we over-indulged in a lot of junk food that was delightful and well worth the calories. We finished off our short stint on Catalina Island by grabbing some touristy memorabilia, and then heading back to our boat for the trek back to Newport Beach.

Exhausted from all of our weekend fun, we stumbled back to our car, picked up dinner, and headed home to snuggle up for the night. It was such a fun weekend as we celebrated the gift of Steve’s life and forged new memories to look back fondly on. Birthdays are such an incredible opportunity to take time to appreciate all of your blessings in life, especially those you love!

Anyone else have any fun birthday traditions, excursions, or memories to share?

The City

Monday, June 6th, 2011

My hubs, Steve, and I recently enjoyed a quick visit to San Francisco. It wasn’t our first time, but we were excited because we had planned to make the most of our visit and do some things we hadn’t previously done. With our bags packed and plans made for our mini-getaway for two, we were on our way and pretty pumped about it.

There is something about San Francisco that feels surreal. From the very first time I drove across the Bay Bridge into the city, I felt like I was driving straight into a movie. The Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz … it’s a city full of iconic, cool places that capture your imagination with their beauty, mystery, and magnitude.

First thing in the morning when we arrived, we got checked in to our hotel in Union Square and wasted no time getting started on our full exploration of the city. The very first thing we did was head to a trolley stop. While this was not Steve’s first time aboard these iconic contraptions, it had been a long time since he had, and it was definitely my first. We opted to pass up on seats for the opportunity to stand on the slim edge and hold tight to a brass pole. As oncoming trolleys and traffic zoomed past just inches from us, we squealed at the exhilaration of it and awed at the fact that this mode of transportation was remotely legal. Nonetheless, we enjoyed every second huddled up tightly beside one another enjoying the breathtaking, picturesque, fun, and must-do ride all the way to the Hyde Street Pier. From there it was all walking.

After taking a stroll down the Hyde Street Pier, we walked to Fisherman’s Wharf. Steve and I aren’t big seafood people, but we still enjoyed checking out the markets with giant lobsters, crabs, and all sorts of fishy options. Despite passing on a true Fisherman’s Wharf lunch, we did go for a San Francisco style treat – sourdough bread bowls with soup. I even ventured so far as to get lobster bisque, which was rather delightful, I must say. Quickly devouring our grub, we hit to the sidewalk again continuing all the way down the Embarcadero to catch the Alcatraz Clipper (not a short walk – fyi).

That’s right; we were voluntarily heading over to the notorious and ominous Alcatraz. This was something I had always wanted to do, and this time our adventure was a first for both of us. We boarded the boat and enjoyed a gorgeous jaunt over to “The Rock.” We happened to visit San Francisco on one of the most beautiful days of the year, which meant that Alcatraz was more like paradise than a prison to us. The views of the city were panoramic and unparalleled. As we tried to imagine what it would have been like on an average foggy, cold, and windy San Fran day, we headed up the long walk to the prison itself. We were enamored with the stories of the prisoners who once resided within its concrete walls. It was an incredible, indescribable experience that I will never forget.

After catching the ferry back to the Embarcadero, we continued our lengthy day of walking by heading to the Ferry Building to meet up with a long-time friend of mine that I hadn’t seen in ages. We enjoyed some hors d’oeuvres and great conversation while the sun sank into the horizon. With a full day of excitement under our belts, we made the long trek back down the Embarcadero to catch another trolley back to our hotel to call it a night, but not before stopping at the legendary Blondies for a late night slice of pizza. It was a perfect day.

The next morning we indulged in a yummy breakfast at a diner in Union Square. Fueled up, we did yet more walking. This time we checked out the downtown area enjoying various parks, shopping venues, and made sure to stop and get me my first Giants baseball t-shirt. Not sure how I have lived out in California for nearly five years married to a huge Giants fan and was just managing to pick one of these up. For whatever reason, I was happy for the new addition to my wardrobe. Having enjoyed a lot of what the city had to offer, we packed up, checked out, and hopped aboard BART to head to the airport.

As we always say when we manage to get away together just the two of us, “We have to do this more often!” We have so much fun together, and it’s just so exciting to get away and make new memories with each other. All in all, visiting San Francisco with my best friend and the love of my life was an incredible adventure that I enjoyed every second of.*To comment on this entry, simply click on the “no comment” link in blue just below the post (if someone has already commented, you will see a number instead of “no” in front of “comment”). Snoop, There it is

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

My husband and I love doing pretty much anything and everything together. We are always up to try something new, go somewhere different, and push ourselves to branch out. One of the things we have recently picked up doing on the side is running.

Now, don’t get all excited, we are amateur at best. We don’t monitor our diet or stick to any sort of strict training schedule. Instead, we eat as we normally would, run when we can, and take things at a pace that is comfortable. Nonetheless, we have been enjoying our new endeavor, which led us to run our second 5K last weekend.

Located at Knott’s Berry Farm, we were excited for the Coaster Run that featured an inspiring pre-race appearance by Snoopy himself. While getting up at 6:45AM on a weekend was less than exciting for me (I am far from a morning person), my excitement and adrenaline started kicking in as we stretched and waited in the mass of people lined up at the start line. When the gun fired, we were off and running.

It was a cold and rainy morning, but my husband and I stuck together and crossed the finish line extremely proud of ourselves. There is something exhilarating about accomplishing something like that with one another (and the fact that it was helping a good cause was a double bonus). As we high-fived and hugged, we decided that pushing ourselves to do things like a 5K at the dawn of day is a bonding experience. You overcome something together, and it is a unique and intimate thing.

Sometimes it is tough to push yourself to do something difficult or outside of the box; I get that. But when you do, it almost always leads to fun memories, laughter, and closeness. Participating in a new activity is exciting and naturally adds a little flair and novelty to your relationship, which I think just about everyone could use from time to time. As you stretch yourself, you grow as an individual and a couple. It forces you to tackle new problems and situations as a team. There is the physical challenge and the emotional and relational reward.

I want to encourage you to sit down with your spouse or significant other and make a plan to do something different. Think outside the box. Of course it needs to be something that you would both somewhat enjoy, but try to come up with something that you wouldn’t typically think of or have been putting off. I guarantee you will be happy you did.

P.S. I would love to hear any of your stories of doing something fun together either past, present, or in the future. If you email me your story and attach some pictures, I just might have to feature it on the website to encourage others!

Our Adventures: Chicago

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

A picture we took of Chicago from our favorite spot.

Recently, Steve and I have been traveling quite a bit. We both love traveling, and each place we recently visited proposed some new adventure. From food to shopping, excursions to relaxation, family to friends, business to pleasure, we made sure to savor every moment together laughing, learning, and making memories along the way.

First stop, Chicago! Steve and I absolutely love the Windy City. We stopped through for the first time when I was moving to California. Steve had come along for the cross-country ride, and a pit stop in Chicago was a must. It was love at first sight! We didn’t get a ton of time there on our first stop, but it was enough to make us want more. Ever since that visit, we decided a trip back was non-negotiable but weren’t sure when it would happen.

As many of you now know, an opportunity arose for me to be Managing Editor on a premarital-focused webzine called Start Marriage Right. Well, we finally got our wish come true and were offered the opportunity to head back to Chicago to take care of some business with one of Start Marriage Right’s premiere partners, Moody Publishers. To say we were excited was an understatement. The end of August we packed our bags and were off to Chi-town.

Stealing a kiss at our favorite spot in the city.

As soon as we got in, we grabbed our rental car and headed to the heart of the city to meet at the famous Gino’s East Pizza for some deep dish, Chicago-style pizza and to talk business. The team I am working with was spectacular, and they even gave us a tour of the Moody Bible Institute, which was both beautiful and surreal to see in person. Stuffed on pizza and excited about the project, Steve and I headed out on our own to explore the city. We covered some serious ground including the Trump tower, recognizable Chicago sign, the Old Chicago Water Tower & Pumping Station, The John Hancock Center, and The Drake hotel (as seen in My Best Friend’s Wedding). We were wiped out and hungry, so we capped our wonderful day off with a stop at Portillo’s to try a Chicago-style hot dog. It was both interesting and delightful.

Saturday started bright and early as we headed out to see Dr. Gary Chapman’s marriage seminar The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted. If you haven’t done a marriage seminar, I would highly encourage it. They aren’t terribly expensive, but what you learn is invaluable. We were honored to have the opportunity to dine with Dr. Chapman over the lunch break. I was in shock that I was sitting there next to this man that I esteem so highly and struggled to choke back the million and one things I wanted to say. He was very gracious and kind, and it really was an experience I won’t soon forget.

Steve and Me with Dr. Gary Chapman!

After the seminar, our “business” was handled, and we had the rest of the weekend to do as we pleased. Boy did we jam pack the rest of the time with lots of walking, exploring, and eating. We went to Millenium and Grant Park enjoying the identifiable Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Great Lawn, Cloud Gate “The Bean,” and Crown Fountain. We made sure to stop at Al’s Italian Beef where we had a dipped Italian beef sandwich and fries that were out of this world delicious. Our eating excursions continued as we stopped at one of Rick Bayless’ restaurants, Xoco. After enjoying a few moments in our favorite spot in the city near the Vietnam Memorial, we continued walking block after block until we finally called it a night.

On the Wendella Boat Tour

Our last day we started off with a a very tourist-like approach, a Wendella boat tour. We loved it though as we cruised gracefully through the city learning about its rich history and soaking in its beauty. A Wendella boat tour is an  must for anyone wanting to get a good dose of what Chicago is all about. It made for some amazing photo ops. Can you guess what we did after? Walked! Yes, we walked all around the city more, stopping back at Millenium and Grant Park to this time enjoy the Great Lawn, Lurie Garden, and Buckingham Fountain. We definitely made the most of our time.

As we left in the wee hours of Monday morning, I basked in both sadness to leave but excitement and awe at this incredible city. Chicago is quite possibly my favorite city, managing to have the excitement of a big city but the charm of a small town. It is beautiful, invigorating, quaint, historical, and inspires me at every corner. My husband and I had the most wonderful time there savoring every possible moment. It made us realize how wonderful and important getaways for the two of us really are. To quote Frank Sinatra,”They have the time, the time of their life…Chicago, Chicago.”

Breaking up is Hard to do: Distractions

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Often times a break up leaves a person with unoccupied moments that were previously occupied by the relationship. Those unoccupied moments are the times where people begin to feel at a loss, sad, lonely, and debate the decision they made. Instead of looking at those moments as sad vacancies, look at those moments as positive vacancies waiting to be filled with an opportunity.

Relationships are demanding and usually take up the bulk of our free time. Of course it can be nice to have someone to snuggle up with on a Friday night or go out with Saturday, but post break up, those times become unique opportunities. That free time can now be spent to pursue healthy distractions from your recent “heart break.” Personally there are times I wish I had fully utilizedmy single moments to go places I wanted to go, do things I enjoyed but never had time for, pursue dreams, fulfill postponed goals, and just explore the world. There is so much the world has to offer, and while relationships are one of life’s greatest joys, single-hood can be a unique and fun time to create special memories. That is why rather than sitting around being bummed that you have free time on your hands, you should jump on them as a unique opportunity to check some cool things off your list of life to-do’s.

There are so many fun adventures just waiting to be taken head on by you. Travelling for me is one of those things I wish I had taken advantage of when I was in college. As a wife, I don’t want to go anywhere without my husband, and we also have to coordinate around vacation time and finances while balancing spending time with our families that are spread across the country. Travelling is a wonderful example of utilizing your new single-hood to the fullest. Whatever it is that you enjoy, take this time to find healthy distractions to fill your time, invigorate your senses, and aid you in healing.
