Behind the Scenes

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

By Ashley McIlwain

So, you may have seen some of our recent Facebook posts and Tweets about this, but we are working on a new video project that we are super pumped about! It’s been in the works for a while, but 2 weekends ago we actually did the filming. Eee!

It was a gorgeous day out, which was perfect since we had decided to shoot outdoors at one of our favorite local parks. My husband, Steve, who has taken point with this whole project, was an amazing jack of all trades! Our camera guys, Justin and Eric, were outstanding and such a blessing. And, of course, our couples in the video were marvelous as well.

All in all, it was a super fun (and frantic) day that we are supremely ecstatic about. Now Steve will be working on all of the cutting, editing, and stylizing (He’s ridiculously talented at a lot of things, including video editing). Although we can hardly wait, the reveal is yet to come … so stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are some behind the scenes photos that got snapped throughout the day to tie you over.

Me, speaking from the heart.

Announcement: New Feature

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

A new feature is coming soon!

That’s right, starting next Thursday, August 11th, we will debut our new feature Noteworthy.

Have ever you noticed how music has a way of evoking an array of emotions? Or perhaps you are like me, where there are times a song captures what’s in my heart. Then again there are moments where I hear a song that just resonates with what I am going through, and I feel understood. My guess is that most of you can relate, which is why we decided to launch this new feature.

Starting August 11th, Noteworthy will begin to appear on the Little Wifey blog on a regular basis, showcasing songs that we have found to inspire, encourage, and uplift our relationships. It could be a romantic, serious, or cute song, but the point is for you to create a playlist that encourages you, your relationship, and/or marriage.

In the words of Ronald Reagan, “Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music.”

So, mark your calendars because August 11th, Noteworthy will arrive, and you aren’t going to want to miss a beat of this new, fun, and fresh feature!

Our Adventures: Chicago

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

A picture we took of Chicago from our favorite spot.

Recently, Steve and I have been traveling quite a bit. We both love traveling, and each place we recently visited proposed some new adventure. From food to shopping, excursions to relaxation, family to friends, business to pleasure, we made sure to savor every moment together laughing, learning, and making memories along the way.

First stop, Chicago! Steve and I absolutely love the Windy City. We stopped through for the first time when I was moving to California. Steve had come along for the cross-country ride, and a pit stop in Chicago was a must. It was love at first sight! We didn’t get a ton of time there on our first stop, but it was enough to make us want more. Ever since that visit, we decided a trip back was non-negotiable but weren’t sure when it would happen.

As many of you now know, an opportunity arose for me to be Managing Editor on a premarital-focused webzine called Start Marriage Right. Well, we finally got our wish come true and were offered the opportunity to head back to Chicago to take care of some business with one of Start Marriage Right’s premiere partners, Moody Publishers. To say we were excited was an understatement. The end of August we packed our bags and were off to Chi-town.

Stealing a kiss at our favorite spot in the city.

As soon as we got in, we grabbed our rental car and headed to the heart of the city to meet at the famous Gino’s East Pizza for some deep dish, Chicago-style pizza and to talk business. The team I am working with was spectacular, and they even gave us a tour of the Moody Bible Institute, which was both beautiful and surreal to see in person. Stuffed on pizza and excited about the project, Steve and I headed out on our own to explore the city. We covered some serious ground including the Trump tower, recognizable Chicago sign, the Old Chicago Water Tower & Pumping Station, The John Hancock Center, and The Drake hotel (as seen in My Best Friend’s Wedding). We were wiped out and hungry, so we capped our wonderful day off with a stop at Portillo’s to try a Chicago-style hot dog. It was both interesting and delightful.

Saturday started bright and early as we headed out to see Dr. Gary Chapman’s marriage seminar The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted. If you haven’t done a marriage seminar, I would highly encourage it. They aren’t terribly expensive, but what you learn is invaluable. We were honored to have the opportunity to dine with Dr. Chapman over the lunch break. I was in shock that I was sitting there next to this man that I esteem so highly and struggled to choke back the million and one things I wanted to say. He was very gracious and kind, and it really was an experience I won’t soon forget.

Steve and Me with Dr. Gary Chapman!

After the seminar, our “business” was handled, and we had the rest of the weekend to do as we pleased. Boy did we jam pack the rest of the time with lots of walking, exploring, and eating. We went to Millenium and Grant Park enjoying the identifiable Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Great Lawn, Cloud Gate “The Bean,” and Crown Fountain. We made sure to stop at Al’s Italian Beef where we had a dipped Italian beef sandwich and fries that were out of this world delicious. Our eating excursions continued as we stopped at one of Rick Bayless’ restaurants, Xoco. After enjoying a few moments in our favorite spot in the city near the Vietnam Memorial, we continued walking block after block until we finally called it a night.

On the Wendella Boat Tour

Our last day we started off with a a very tourist-like approach, a Wendella boat tour. We loved it though as we cruised gracefully through the city learning about its rich history and soaking in its beauty. A Wendella boat tour is an  must for anyone wanting to get a good dose of what Chicago is all about. It made for some amazing photo ops. Can you guess what we did after? Walked! Yes, we walked all around the city more, stopping back at Millenium and Grant Park to this time enjoy the Great Lawn, Lurie Garden, and Buckingham Fountain. We definitely made the most of our time.

As we left in the wee hours of Monday morning, I basked in both sadness to leave but excitement and awe at this incredible city. Chicago is quite possibly my favorite city, managing to have the excitement of a big city but the charm of a small town. It is beautiful, invigorating, quaint, historical, and inspires me at every corner. My husband and I had the most wonderful time there savoring every possible moment. It made us realize how wonderful and important getaways for the two of us really are. To quote Frank Sinatra,”They have the time, the time of their life…Chicago, Chicago.”

Love Tip

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Today while I was checking out my Twitter, I saw a few Tweets that were encouraging to me. I thought I would share them today with you to encourage you as well!

  • “Gratitude for even the little things keeps romance alive.”(posted by “DrMichellexo)
  • “The word encouragement literally means to give courage, to inspire with courage, spirit or hope. Do you encourage your wife daily?”(posted by “drgaryandbarb”) Obviously this goes for women too…do you encourage your husband daily?
  • “Let your actions create the environment of love in your home. Do not wait for them to deserve it. Love on purpose those God has given you.”(posted by “MarriageLimeys”)
  • “Your marriage is more important than your money. Money alone will never bring you happiness.”(post by “DrGaryChapman”)

Hopefully you find these things encouraging and spurring. It’s nice to have helpful hints, tips, and advice from people regarding the most precious relationship we have here on Earth.

Getting to Know Little Wifey: Spread the Word

Friday, March 26th, 2010

One of the biggest things I have noticed is that I give most of my attention to things that my friends and family suggest to me. Things I would otherwise probably never heard of or checked out are now on my radar. Plus, I trust the judgment of my friends and family, so I am going to put for weight to what they are suggesting to me. That’s why I need each of you to help spread the word about Little Wifey!

There are several ways for you to help spread the word about Little Wifey:

  • Email– Send out an email to all of your friends & family letting them know what Little Wifey is, why you enjoy it, why you recommend it, and the web address.
  • Facebook– Invite all of your friends and family on Facebook to become a fan (Just go to the Little Wifey Facebook page, click on “Suggest to Friends” just beneath the logo/profile picture, select everyone in the little window that pops up, and click “Send Invitations”). Post something about it on your wall, send messages on there, or anything else you might think is helpful; it’s an easy way to get the news out there about LW. Don’t forget that until the end of the month we are holding the LW March Madness Contest offering the person who gets the most people to become fans on Facebook a $50 gift card redeemable at Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse, or Bahama Breeze along with some cool, LW merchandise, and the 3 runners up will each receive a $25 gift card!!!
  • Word of Mouth – Tell people you know about it. It’s fairly easy for people to remember the name, and they can just Google it if they can’t remember the web address. Tell your pastors about it and encourage them to let the congregation know about it. Basically just tell everyone you can about it, why you love it, and why they will love it!

If you enjoy Little Wifey, then I am sure your friends, family members, colleagues, and acquaintances will too! It’s pretty easy to share the news with people, and it’s really appreciated by me, so please get out there and let everyone you know, know about Little Wifey! Thank you!!

If you still have thoughts, questions, etc….just email me – ashley@littlewifey.com, and I will do my best to answer your questions!
