When do you and your spouse/family typically decorate for Christmas?

I’ll get us started …

Steve and I love Christmas, and we’re not shy about admitting it! For us, the sooner we can decorate, the better. So, typically, we get out all of our indoor decorations and outdoor lights, and put those up the weekend after Halloween. We get a live tree; so unfortunately, we have to

be more patient with getting that up and decorated. Most places don’t start selling them until after Thanksgiving, so we head out as soon as we get home from our Thanksgiving travels to get one. We have a fun tradition of picking out our tree, ordering pizza, and decorating with Christmas music blaring. Of course we cap it off with hot cider (for Steve) and hot cocoa (for me).

Some people think that decorating and getting Christmas festivities underway so quickly undermines Thanksgiving, but we don’t feel that way at all. If anything, it gets us in the perfect, thankful spirit for Thanksgiving. We thoroughly enjoy Thanksgiving and make the most of it, but we have the added bonus of also enjoying Christmas as long as possible too 🙂

Okay, it’s your turn!

Most years we decorate the 1st weekend in November. This year we opted for a real tree so had to postpone until the weekend after Thanksgiving,

I’d be interested to know what other traditions people have for the holidays.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Ray, thanks for sharing! The real tree, while beautiful and our favorite, definitely pushes things back a bit waiting for them to be available. Like you, I enjoy hearing what other people’s traditions are!

  • Linda Says:

We try to decorate the day after Oct.31st. What a refreshing change of events and it is always welcomed in our home. Christmas…awww I am not all ways first at getting it put away either. I say let it linger!

  • Meredith Says:

We start ASAP after Thanksgiving! I absolutely love this time of year…hot cocoa, lights everywhere, our tree, etc. I started a new tradition this year of ordering a cute/corny ornament for our tree. I plan to do this every year ; ) The ornament arrived a few days before we got our tree–Scott loved the surprise ; ) When we were in PA for Thanksgiving, we actually spent about an hour driving around looking for lights! A lot of families that live in the area down here really go ALL out, so we find ourselves taking detours every chance we get to see the lights and decorations in the neighborhood.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Merdith, I am with you … what’s not to love?! That ornament tradition sounds cute! I like it 🙂 Driving around looking at lights is so much fun! It’s amazing how some people really go all out! When we get a house, we will definitely do a lot more on the exterior to match our interior winter wonderland. Sounds like you 2 make the most of this time of year!
