Talking Tuesday

Share your thoughts, feelings, and stories as well as respond to others regarding these questions:

Do you and your husband/significant other watch college football? If so, who is your team and why? If you are single, feel free to answer the same questions.

I’ll get us started …

Yes, yes, and yes! My hubs and I love college football and can’t get enough of it! While usually it’s the guy that’s obsessed, I’m the one who has the obsession. I grew up in Central Pennsylvania meaning I am a die-hard Penn State fan, so Steve was really left with no options besides being a hardcore fan himself. Granted, he adjusted quite nicely. Obviously it’s been a rough time for us Penn State fans recently because of the devastating , heinous actions of Jerry Sandusky, but there’s no room for fair-weathered fans in this house … we’re sticking by the blue and white.

Okay, it’s your turn!

My wife and I are not into sports any more, we don’t even have a television, but, I raised in Hog country and we are not doing so well right now, but, I always been a Hog fan, win or loose, and I always will be. My wife is a Buckeye, but I don’t hold that against her.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Jerry, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. Again, sports can become all-encompassing. As fun as it is and as much as it can bring couples closer, it can also be a problem sadly. That’s awesome that you are a true blue Hog fan. I won’t hold the Buckeye thing against your wife either … haha. Thanks for sharing!

Having grown up in Lion Country and graduated from Penn State’s Law School-do I have a choice? We are…Penn State…in the good times and in the bad. My husband also likes WVU and Marshall to support his dad. In fact, I think my husband is nearly and all out college football fan…with the exception of Ohio State.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Fiona, no you don’t have a choice! Haha. I agree, we have to stick by the Lions in good times and bad … that’s what separates the true blue fans from the posers. Honestly, I love college football too and can appreciate most teams … except for Michigan of course. Guess we all have our one nemesis. Thanks for sharing!

  • Vicki Says:

We love to watch our local sports teams. The Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.

  • Lauren Says:

We aren’t much of sports fans. We are however fans of watching serious sports fans while watching a game! For instance my dad is a Vols fan & my brother is a Gator fan… Needless to say they provided our entertainment Saturday :)

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Lauren, that is hilarious! While I love college football (and a lot of sports), I wouldn’t call myself a fanatic. However, I have been around a few in my day, and it’s definitely entertaining. Sports fan fanatics should be a sport I think :) Thanks for sharing!

  • Heather Says:

My husband & I do not watch Football. He isn’t a big sports fan, & we actually gave up cable for 6 months to save toward our anniversary trip next month. We do have plans, however, for a date night to the local small college Homecoming Football game this year.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Heather, I think that’s awesome that you guys gave up cable to save for your anniversary trip! Truthfully, I think we could all do without cable from time to time so we would spend more time with people! Anyway, I do think you will have fun at your local college’s homecoming game! Even if you aren’t a huge sports fan, I think going to events can be super fun and a great excuse to snuggle up :) Thanks for sharing!

  • Teresa Says:

My fiancé (wedding date is Oct 6th!!) and I am both huge college football fans. He is a die hard Tennessee Vols fan. I am a die hard Alabama Crimson Tide fan. We love to tease about the games and how TN has a rivalry with Bama, but Bama is more concerned with it’s rivalry with Auburn. In the end, we live watching, discussing, cheering on our teams. And we have this understanding-if TN is playing anyone except AL, then I cheer for TN, and if AL is playing anyone except TN, then he cheers for Bama. And on the weekend they play each other, well, that day will require patience, long suffering, and the promise of good make-up sex!!

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Teresa, your big day is coming up … congratulations! It sounds like you and your fiance have enjoyed your difference of teams and make the most of it. It’s fun when you both are in to it so you can turn it into some fun memories and moments together. Thanks for joining the conversation!

  • Meredith Says:

We too are die hard PSU fans! My husband has season tickets so we make the trek from MD to PA every weekend there is a home game. Some people cringe at the idea of doing that weekend after weekend, but honestly we cannot wait for our 3-ish hour car ride together. We catch up, listen to music, hold hands, stop at our favorite truck stop…we have such awesome memories from our travels on the weeknds…we may be surrounded by 100,000plus, but it really is ‘our’ time ; )

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Meredith, that’s amazing that you and Scott have season tickets to PSU! I wish we lived closer so we could go to the games, but we are stuck cheering from out here in Cali. It sounds like you guys make a whole weekend of your game days, which I love. I’m sure those are all memories you will never forget! Thanks for sharing!

  • Shayla Says:

    Ashley,
I think it’s great what fans you and your husband are! How cute that you and your husband can enjoy a game together.
As for my husband and I, we aren’t much of any kind of football fans. I grew up in California so I never really had a “team” I was obsessed with to cheer about. However, now my husband and I are at the University of Arkansas and I have never seen team spirit like I do with the Razorback fans. They are crazy! Every game day they have flags and magnents on their trucks supporting the Hogs. It’s a fun environment to be around and every once in awhile I’ll inquire about the Hogs score but we aren’t huge fans.

    • Ashley McIlwain Says:

Shayla, thanks for kicking off the conversation this week! It might not be the worst thing in the world that you and your husband aren’t obsessed with any teams. I’ve seen plenty of people go way over board, but I will say that it’s nice to enjoy cheering on a team this time of year, especially if you have history with them. At least you are enjoying observing the Razorback fans :)
